"Big
Red" - Lighthouse |
|
"Big Red", officially
known as the "Holland Harbor Lighthouse"
rests on Holland's original harbor, which was hand-dug
in 1872 in order to establish itself as a town. Replacing
the original wooden lighthouse, Big Red was built
in 1934 with metal siding which protects it against
Lake Michigan's waves and weather. Abandoned by the
Coast Guard in 1970 as an unnecessary surplus, Big
Red was adopted by the Holland Harbor Lighthouse Commission
in 1974 who now cares for its preservation and restoration.
This 45 foot lighthouse can be viewed across the harbor
from Holland State Park. |
